Alcohol Use:
(Note: Alcohol consumption, purchase and/or transporting is illegal for
persons under the age of twenty-one in Massachusetts.)
- If a teen you know is drinking alcohol alone at home, drinking before coming
to school or brings booze to school mixed with juice, they have a problem
and need help.
- If someone you know drinks and drives, or shows signs of having been drinking
before they drove, they have a problem. They are also putting themselves,
their passengers and other people on the road in great danger.
- If you have a friend who is drinking and driving, be the best friend they
ever had and report it to a counselor, parent or the police. You may save
their life or the life of another.
- The following statements by people who drink are all FALSE:
"I can't be an alcoholic because I only drink on weekends or after five PM."
"I only drink beer, not hard stuff, so my drinking can't be addictive."
"I'm not a "skid row bum," so I can't be an alcoholic."
"I go to school on time, play sports, get good grades and never get in trouble,
so my drinking isn't a problem."
- Alcohol abuse plays a very significant role in the number of cases reported
where children and teens have been abused or neglected by their caregivers
and/or parents. Alcohol is also frequently a factor in dating violence or
relationship violence among teens.
