Online Medical Resources

Note: Visitors are advised that some medical sites have been determined to be either inaccurate, outdated or simply wrong about what they present, according to some rating services. The following have been found to be very reliable and up-to-date. As a rule of thumb, parents are advised to visit more than one source and to bear in mind that no online medical site should not take the place of a physician's consult.

Medline Plus - An online medical search engine and medical resource center run by the National Library of Medicine, a publicly funded agency. http://medlineplus.gov

Medscape - This top rated site is one of the best. Check it out at.

Dr. Koop - A very useful site for looking up all things medical. Again, this site is rated as very good also.

Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary - A great source of "how-to" info for providing first aid.
Also has useful info on poisons, poison control numbers and descriptions of diseases, etc. at http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?li=MNI&ArticleKey=224

WebMD Center
Family Edication.com. This top rated, longest running family focused site could be in several of our categories. A great resource.
Check out their weekly newsletter, it's loaded with useful goodies, at http://familyeducation.com/home/

Children Now. This too is one of the best out there for info and all things "family".

Kids Health For Parents - By the Nemours Foundation. This is a great site!

The American Academy of Pediatrics - This site is incredible. Very thorough and covers a wide variety of topics. Considered very reliable.

Harvard School of Public Health: Headlice Information - Well, sorry to rmeind you! But this is a great site if you're wondering what to look for! Happy parenting!

Center for Disease Control (CDC) - You name it, they cover it. A very useful and reliable site of the Federal Government.

Starbright - From their web site: "The STARBRIGHT" Foundation is dedicated to the development of projects that empower seriously ill children to combat the medical and emotional challenges they face on a daily basis." A useful site for parents/adults who either know of or have a child living with a life threatening illness.

Family Readiness Kit for Disasters - by The American Academy of Pediatrics. An incredibly useful site should the unthinkable ever happen. Contains many sections on the "how to's and what to do's" etc. We hope it's never needed. http://www.aap.org/family/frk/frkit.htm

Just for the Health of it! - A good source of therapeutic humor! By Patty Wooten, RN, BSN. This is a real gem!
