Girl Power Sleepover Info
Friday, Feb 8th
Cost: $10.00

To Girls:    Okay, here it is for the third year! As we've discussed in group, we'd like to be able to do the annual GP Sleepover in Town Hall, but we can't because of liability and problems we would have with the alarm system, etc. So we will hold our Sleepover at the same location as last year, which everyone said was far better than Town Hall anyway at the Friends Community House in Westport. Our Sleepover will be held on Friday, Feb 8, from 7:00 PM until the next morning at nine. We plan to have lots of foods and we can bake stuff too if you'd like! We'll plan our program for the evening in group the week before and, decide on which movies to rent, too. For sleepover location, see below!

To Parents: So now you know this for sure: That Kevin, and interns Victoria and Ariana, must truly like working with young people, or, that we have lost our minds! A little of both, actually, helps to do this work! Basically, we're offering this sleepover not only because the girls have requested it, but because it deepens our sense of community and allows us to do something a little different with a program built into it. While most girls have experienced many sleepovers by now, this one will be both fun, but, structured, too, with the goals of our Girl Power Group in mind. Group leaders will be on site at all times.  We especially encourage parents to call us if you have any questions. For sleepover location, see below! (Note: Kathy Orr, who assists me in running the group, will be by on Friday night, but cannot do the overnight part because of childcare needs.)

Location:    Kevin is a member of the Westport Friends Meeting (Quakers), located at 930 Main Road, Westport. They have offered us the use of their Community House free of charge for the night. It has a large hall with stage, fireplace, full kitchen, living room and three bathrooms, with lots of smaller break0out rooms as well.  The property has several buildings on it, but the main buildings are the meetinghouse and the Community House which stand side by side to each other, Our group will be using the Community House only, and we will be the only group using the facility while we are there. The phone number at the Community House is 508-636-3793. (Cell phones work in the area, too. Kevin's cell is 508-287-9056.) We have hosted and I have run scores of weekend retreats for young people at the Community House, so I can say that it's a great, safe space for young people to stay.

The Plan:

  • 7 PM Friday, Feb 8, arrive at TOWN HALL for car-pooling to Westport. We will provide two town-owned vans for transporting (thanks to the Council on Aging!)

  • Leave for Community House in Westport once everyone has arrived. We'll arrive, settle in, play a game, start cooking or baking whatever they want. Sometime around 10:00 PM we'll order in pizza. We will also schedule a whole-group discussion for sometime in the evening. (Of course everyone will be in their sleeping bags and asleep by 11 PM. Sure they will!

  • Next morning, wake up with enough time to clean up, have donuts and pastries and be back at Town Hall for pickup by 10:00 AM.

  • If a parent needs to call during the sleepover, the phone number at the Community House is 508-636-3793. Cell phones work in the area, too. Kevin's cell is 508-287-9056. If a girl wishes to call home at any time, she can. We will discourage girls from making any personal calls to other friends during our sleepover, however.

What to Bring:

  • Sleeping bag, pillow, personal supplies, sleeping clothes, favorite stuffed critter, change of clothes for Sat morning.

  • If anyone is taking a prescribed medication and can self dose, that's fine, but we need to know (confidentially) in advance who is taking what. If a child needs supervision with taking a med, that's fine too, just let us know.

  • Girls should remember to bring their music. (We'll bring boom box)

  • Donated snacks and goodies are always appreciated!!!
