Meeting Themes (Most Suggested by Girls!)

1

Jan 2

Over-protective
Parents

Welcome Back! Today’s topic (chosen by girls) will explore the frustrations many girls feel about feeling overprotected by mom/dad. We’ll discuss the risks, real and perceived, and sort it out.

2

Jan 9

“Boundaries
and Personal
Protection”

Personal space; how close is too close? Are boundaries solid, or can they shift and move? Boundaries with peers, with boys, with other girls and with all the adults in your life….it gets confusing sometimes! We’ll explore this important topic for everyone’s benefit. By “protection” the group meant emotional, physical and sexual protection. We’ll talk about your rights as a person and explore some “tools” to help keep girls safe in the world.

3

Jan 16

“Hair!”

That’s right. We’re talking hair here. How to manage it; grow it; change it and cut it; latest styles, etc. (Kevin may be sad….)

4

Jan 23

“Boys”

You know, that “other” gender that came here from a far-off planet? What we like, don’t like about guys. And why do some boys act so weird, anyway?!

5

Jan 30

Careers

It’s never too early to begin thinking about career choices. If possible, we’ll invite one or two females representing different career tracks. Where are the challenges? How important are grades and all that?

6

Feb 6

Movie Day!
(with Pizza!)

Movie day today! We’ll decide which movie to watch ahead of time. And yes, it has to be age appropriate!

Special

Feb 8

Girl Power
Sleepover!

It’s the now famous annual Girl Power Group Sleepover, Friday, Feb 8, at 7:00 PM until the next morning at 9 AM! Location (not Town Hall) and details will follow to girls and parents. (Evening Discussion topic to be decided by girls.) More info for parents here

7

Feb 13

Early Release
Day!

Let’s plan an off-site activity. Meet at Town Hall at 11:45 AM, hit MacDonald’s, and do something as a group. (Group ends at 4:30 PM for pickup)

Feb 20

Vacation Week
(No Group This Week)

Enjoy, stay safe... see you next week!

8

Feb 27

G.L.B.T.Q.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning, and what it all means. We’ll unravel the myth from fact, review appropriate terminology, and come away smarter and more secure in our own identity.

9

March 5

Letter
Writing Day!

Group members agreed to become proactive and write letters to the media and Select Board expressing their views that the Youth Advocate's position should not be reduced in hours or eliminated in the next fiscal year.

10

March 12 Classy
 Not
 Trashy!
What’s classy? What’s trashy? And how can girls stay with the styles and avoid appearing sleazy? This topic will fly by itself! J
11 March 19 Moods Okay, we all have moods, and mood swings. And some have more "swings' than others! Let's talk about the kinds of moods we experience, why some are good and others not so good, and how to deal with them.
12 March 26 Teachers
and
School!
One girl asked, "What makes some teachers great and others terrible to deal with?" We'll discuss this and most especially, various coping skills to deal successfully with some teachers that seem hard to tolerate.
13 April 2 Too Young for this --
-- Too Old for That!
It' hard being young sometimes, especially coming to terms with things you'd like to do but are told you're too young to do. And how come so many family members treat you like a little kid, anyway? No easy answers, but we can talk about it and try to understand the situation better!
14 April 9 "I Can Do Anything!" Who says you have to do this because you're a girl?
Who says you can't do this because you're a girl?
Wanna bet?
15 April 16 Get Organized! Ever feel like your daily habits and routines could be better organized? Do you keep putting off what you know needs to get done? Are you constantly running out of time, or can't find this or that item over and over? If so, we've got the cure!
  April 23 Vacation Week
(No Group This Week)
Enjoy, stay safe... see you next week!
16 April 30 Kathie's
Belly!
As we know, Kathie Orr, our Girl Power Group Assistant, will be by this week seven months pregnant with her second child. Kathie will lead a discussion about what's going on inside her belly, what being pregnant feels like, what's wonderful and beautiful, where the challenges are, and what her hopes for the future as a mom of two small children might be.

17

May 7
(Early Release Day!)
"Sculpey"
with Gretchen Baker-Smith
Back by popular demand! Two years ago Gretchen Baker-Smith came to share a Sculpey (clay work) project with us. It was very popular! Girls will come over at 11:45 from school. We'll bring in pizza for lunch and then do Sculpey! Pickup time by parents will be at 4:30 PM.

18

May 14 Self
Protection
We have invited State Trooper Diane Breault to come and speak with us about ways that young people, and especially girls, can keep themselves safe in the world. We're not teaching self defense like karate, but rather self awareness and taking steps to remain safe in the world.

19

May 21 "Get out!" Weather permitting, we're going outside today to play outside games, get dirty and the like! Bring clothes to mess around in outside. No wimp' in  out!

20

May 28 Celebrating
our
8th Graders in GP!
That's right, we have just two more weeks of GP this year, and our 8th grade GP Group members will be leaving us in the fall and headed to high school. Let's have an "8th Grader Roast!"

21

June 4 Round-up
and
Looking Ahead
First, let's evaluate our year together and make suggestions for next year. Next, we need to plan our annual end of year Girl Power Field Day Trip! Where to this year? Let's decide...must be practical, affordable and safe!

22

June 11 What's Your
"Dream" Summer?
Our last weekly meeting this year. Summer hopes and plans, and finalizing our GP Field Trip. Oh yes, we're having a party today too! Kevin will bake "something!"

23

June 18
or
June 25
